Responsibilities of the Field Instructor:
1. Create an atmosphere of trust, caring and respect:
discuss with student both MCM and university expectations of the field placement and how performance will be assessed
discuss conflict resolution guidelines as well as skills required for positive confrontation
discuss the university mediation process
acknowledge the difference in status and power between field instructor and student and discuss ways both parties will deal with this difference
identify tasks and responsibilities of field instructor
respect confidentiality and practice integrity
sign learning contract
2. Help the student adapt his/her overall learning goals to the particular field placement.
3. Give clear and insightful feedback to the student about his/her performance/behavior as related to his/her learning goals during weekly meetings.
4. Allow student time and space for reflection on his/her personal development. (the student could be asked to journal or write short reflection papers for discussion in weekly sessions).
5. Practice appropriate disclosure sharing some personal struggles that may have a rapport with what student is experiencing.
6. Practice positive confrontation addressing issues that may be difficult in a caring and professional manner.
7. Be open to and solicit feedback from student on the process and field instructor's style (intentionally at least twice per term).
8. Model appropriate professional boundaries.
9. Negotiate mutual evaluations with student.
Responsibilities of the Student:
1. Be an active participant in learning process:
Take responsibility for weekly field instruction sessions, coming prepared with issues for discussion (e.g.: preparing in advance short written reflection papers on current concerns, questions and struggles)
Take initiative in asking questions that promote understanding of practice in the particular setting
Take notes or make a written summary of each meeting
Prepare agenda for next meeting
2. Develop learning goals related to knowledge-based skills and personal development.
3. Be open to feedback on performance\behaviour.
4. Be willing to engage in a process of self-reflection.
5. Identify values and prejudices and question their implication for professional practice.
6. Endeavour to make the link between performance\behaviour, personal struggles and learning goals.
7. Endeavour to give honest and open feedback to field instructor (intentionally twice per term).
8. With the help of the field instructor, acquire skills in positive confrontation, endeavouring to address issues that may be difficult in a caring and professional manner.
9. Negotiate mutual evaluations with field instructor.
