Camp Cosmos is a day camp program of Montreal City Mission for children of families with low-income, many of whom are from newly arrived refugee or single-parent families.
In existence for over thirty years, the camp enjoys an excellent reputation in the community for innovative programming and high quality staff. This summer Camp Cosmos will run for 6 weeks. We offer up to 65 places for children between the ages of 5 and 11 and up to eight spaces for children with special needs.
The camp is a member of the Quebec Camping Association, which requires that it meet high standards for quality in the areas of programming, staff training, security and administration.
Environmental education is a fundamental part of our camp. We minimize the negative environmental impacts of our camp by reducing, reusing and recycling. Our campers learn about environmental responsibility through fun games and activities and the strong example of their councillors.
Program activities at Camp Cosmos include:
Daily circle time to welcome children, review guidelines and orient them to the daily program;
Swimming twice weekly;
Weekly day-long outing to outdoor places of interest (i.e. beach, Bio-dome, Olympic park, etc.);
Arts and crafts;
Music and theatre;
Visits to local museums, cultural centers and other places of interest;
Thematic days held in local parks;
Daily snacks provided;
Closing talent show for parents and sponsors.
All activities are conducted in both French and English
The counselor-in-training program is for adolescents from families with low-income between the ages of 14 and 17 (eight available spaces). Campers benefit from the competence, kindness and hard work of these youngsters, and participants also receive a very positive and empowering first job experience. Children from families with low-income graduate from the camp program, enroll as counselors-in-training and may eventually receive jobs and training as full-fledged members and leaders of the camp counselor team at Camp Cosmos .
The participants in this program receive:
-A small honorarium ($50.00 per week)
-Two days of intensive training
-Practical work experience with children
-Experience working with children who have special needs
-Supervision and encouragement
-A certificate of completion
-A metro pass.
This year we look forward to learning about the world that grows through gardening, doing exciting arts and crafts, having dance, theatre and music activities and exploring Montreal.
Our program is for families with low income.
We have space available for up to 8 children with special needs.
